NCD Alliance Malawi has joined the Ministry of Health and the global community in observing World Hypertension Day 2025, marked annually on 17th May. The day serves as a global platform to raise awareness about high blood pressure and the steps people can take to prevent its harmful effects.
This year’s commemoration is being held under the theme: “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, and Live Longer.” The message reinforces the importance of knowing one’s blood pressure status and taking appropriate action to maintain a healthy life.
Project Officer for NCD Alliance Malawi, Esther Nyirenda, emphasized that this year’s theme serves as a wake-up call for Malawians to prioritize regular blood pressure checks. She stressed that early detection, proper diagnosis, and consistent treatment are critical in avoiding life-threatening complications caused by hypertension.

High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” because it can develop without symptoms, yet lead to serious health outcomes like stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, and premature death. In Malawi, cases of hypertension are rising, posing a challenge to both rural and urban communities.
NCD Alliance Malawi has commended the government’s ongoing efforts in tackling non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The Ministry of Health’s initiatives, such as community screenings, education campaigns, and promotion of healthy lifestyles, are making healthcare more accessible across the country.
As part of the 2025 campaign, the Alliance is urging Malawians to take responsibility for their health. Simple actions like eating nutritious foods low in salt and fat, staying physically active, avoiding harmful substances, managing stress, and following medical advice can make a big difference.
The Alliance has also called on health professionals, local leaders, civil society organizations, and policymakers to collaborate in expanding access to quality blood pressure services. Reaching underserved areas and increasing public knowledge are key to reducing the national burden of hypertension.
World Hypertension Day is more than a symbolic event. It is a call to action. With collective effort and healthier daily choices, Malawi can curb the spread of hypertension, save lives, and create a stronger, healthier future for all.
