CALLS INTENSIFY TO SPLIT MZIMBA DISTRICT

By Vinjeru Ngwira

A group advocating for the division of Mzimba District says breaking the district into smaller administrative units could help accelerate development and improve the delivery of essential public services to communities.

The group shared its position during a media briefing held in Mzuzu, where its chairperson Samuel Lwara confirmed that they have formally written to the Office of the President and Cabinet (Malawi) asking the government to consider their proposal.

Lwara explained that the proposal recommends dividing the large district into three or four smaller districts as a way of improving administrative efficiency and making development planning more manageable.

According to him, the current size and population of the district make it difficult for government institutions to effectively reach all communities with development programs and essential public services.

The proposal also recommends upgrading the Mbelwa District Council into either a municipal council or a city council to strengthen governance and enhance coordination of development activities.

Lwara noted that despite its large population and vast land size, Mzimba District continues to lag behind in development due to limited government infrastructure and inadequate public facilities.

He said many areas within the district still struggle to access important services such as healthcare and other social amenities, a situation he believes could improve if administrative structures are brought closer to the people.
