Chimwendo Banda has pleaded with Malawians to exercise law and order as responsible authorities relocate the Persons of Concerns and that everyone who acts contrary, will be dealt with accordingly by the laws of the land.
The Homeland Security Minister says Malawi has over 48, 000 refugees and asylum seekers.
Minister of Homeland security has ordered that all refugees and asylum seekers living and conducting businesses outside Dzaleka camp be sent back to the camp within 14 days, adding that the last group should be at Dzaleka by April 28.
Chimwendo added that the exercise should be treated as a matter of national concern.
He was speaking at a joint press briefing with the Inspector General of Police George Kainja and senior officials from the Immigration Department & the refugee camp on how the operation will be carried out Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda says during the inspection exercise which the Immigration Department conducted in 200 areas for the past weeks, it has discovered that there 2,000 refugees and asylum seekers residing illegally in various localities across the country.
The Minister says the refugees and asylum seekers have until 28 April 2021 to relocate to Dzaleka upon the elapse of the 14-day ultimatum which government issued on 1 April this yer.
Inspector General of Police Dr George Kainja says the law George enforcement agency will work in collaboration with the Immigration Department to ensure that the exercise is curried out smoothly.
He has warned that the Police will use necessary force if any refugee or asylum seeker resists to relocate to Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
