Support Staff in various government secondary schools in the country have gone several months without pay as the schools have no funds to pay for their salaries. This development comes as school remain closed due to the marauding corona virus commonly known as Covid 19 pandemic.
Avant publications has learnt that heads from secondary schools in the Central West Education Division have since written the Ministry of Education to assist them on the matter.
In Dedza, most schools have not paid their support staff for four months now as they do not have funds.
Speaking to one headteacher in Mchinji who sought to be interviewed on anonymity said that as a measure to bail out their school from huge debts, his management has decided to only retain the security staff to perform their duties. He said that though this is the case even them will be paid in arrears once the school reopens. He said that the rest of the support staff will be back in the system once schools resume.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has not yet responded to the request.
Most government secondary schools in Malawi depend on the students fees to pay their support staff salaries.
