Football lovers across Malawi are in for an exciting ride as the brand-new NBS Bank National Division League (NDL) kicks off on May 24 with a fiery opener between Villa United and Mitundu Baptist at the Mchinji Community Centre Ground.
This groundbreaking league marks a major shift in Malawi’s football landscape, replacing the long-running regional leagues with a unified national second-tier competition. The Football Association of Malawi (FAM), in collaboration with headline sponsor NBS Bank, officially unveiled the NDL launch plan during a media briefing at Mpira Village in Blantyre.
FAM President Fleetwood Haiya confirmed the opening match and revealed a massive financial boost for participating teams.

“We are pleased to announce that our Executive Committee has approved an increase in subvention to K15 million per team,” said Haiya. “This is part of our commitment to improving club welfare and raising the standard of football across the country.”
The NDL will feature 12 competitive teams battling not only for glory but also for promotion, with the top three earning a ticket to the elite TNM Super League.
Adding to the excitement, NBS Bank Chief Operations Officer Shadrick Chikusilo highlighted the significance of the bank’s K982 million investment over three seasons.

“Our partnership with FAM is strategic,” said Chikusilo. “We believe this league will not only promote our brand nationwide but also elevate the standard of football in Malawi.”
The league promises a new chapter in Malawian football, filled with passion, talent, and opportunity laying a stronger foundation for the future of the sport.
