The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) conducted a media training session on responsible gambling at Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel on Thursday, January 23, 2025. The training aimed to equip journalists with the necessary knowledge to raise awareness about responsible gambling practices.

Speaking during the session, Owen Chuma, Acting Director of Legal and Regulatory Services at MAGLA, emphasized the importance of engaging the media in spreading the message to the public. He noted that the media plays a vital role in ensuring that people understand the risks of gambling and adopt responsible gambling behaviors.

Chuma revealed that the gambling industry contributes at least K12 billion annually, with K4.5 billion going to the government as surplus revenue. He explained that the industry plays a significant role in the economy, and ensuring responsible gambling practices is crucial for sustainability.

In addition to generating revenue, Chuma highlighted that the gambling industry is also actively involved in corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. These include contributions to sectors such as health, sports, and community development programs, which benefit various groups across the country.

Chuma urged the public not to view gambling as a source of income, but rather as a form of entertainment. He warned that excessive gambling could lead to financial distress and other social issues, advising gamblers to engage in the activity responsibly.

He further cautioned against street gambling, commonly known as “Wachiona Ndani,” describing it as illegal. He stressed that individuals caught engaging in such activities should face legal consequences, as unregulated gambling poses risks to both individuals and society.

On his part, Feston Malekezo, Chairman of Nyika Media Club, underscored the media’s role in promoting responsible gambling. He pointed out that irresponsible gambling has contributed to mental health issues and even cases of suicide. Malekezo urged journalists to educate the public on responsible gambling to help reduce such incidents.
