President Chakwera to Unveil New Kamuzu Dam

His Excellency, President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, is poised to unveil the recently enhanced and restored Kamuzu Dam 1 in Malingunde, under the jurisdiction of Senior Traditional Authority Masumbankhunda in Lilongwe.

As conveyed by the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), President Chakwera is set to arrive at the location around 9 am.

Subsequent to the unveiling ceremony, President Chakwera will lead a developmental gathering at Kalonga Community Day Secondary School, overseen by Senior Traditional Authority Masula in the district.

Nestled along the Lilongwe River, roughly 20 kilometers southwest of Lilongwe City, the original Kamuzu Dam I was established in 1966.

The recent elevation and rejuvenation of the Kamuzu Dam have augmented its combined catchment area to 1,870 square kilometers.

The addition of 5 meters to the dam’s height is expected to effectively mitigate the escalating demand for clean potable water in Lilongwe City and its environs.

Data indicates that the modernized facility now boasts an upgraded capacity of 25 million cubic meters, marking a substantial improvement over its previous capacity of a mere 5 million cubic meters.

Furthermore, the revamped dam is projected to yield a daily output of 175,000 cubic meters, a notable increase from its earlier capacity of 125,000 cubic meters per day.
