Former DPP Minister Ben Phiri Protests Alleged Arrest Threats in Parliament.

Ben Phiri, a prominent figure hailing from the main opposition party in Malawi, which was ousted from government power in 2020, is currently serving as a legislator representing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for Thyolo Central. Phiri, known for his diverse roles during the reign of the DPP, has recently taken a stance against perceived threats of arrest within the parliamentary domain.

During a session held yesterday, tensions arose when a fellow member from the ruling government hinted at the potential arrest of Phiri. This prompted an immediate objection from Phiri himself, who recalled a prior incident when similar sentiments were expressed in parliament and he was subsequently apprehended once the session adjourned.

In response to Phiri’s concerns, Deputy Speaker Madalitso Kazombo intervened and assured the legislator of his parliamentary immunity, providing a shield against any potential arrest within the legislative arena. This incident sheds light on the intricate dynamics of political opposition and the evolving landscape of Malawi’s government structure.
