Mponela Police have arrested a 47-year-old man for allegedly attempting to deposit counterfeit money with a face value of MK440,000 in MK2,000 notes into his Airtel Money account, Avant publications has learnt.
Avant publications has established that the suspect is Chimwemwe Masanje who hails from Chioza Village, Traditional Authority Kayembe in Dowa District.
Inspector Kaitano Lubrino who is the Mponela Police spokesperson has confirmed of the development in an interview.
Inspector Lubrino said that the suspect allegedly approached an Airtel Money agent at Nambuma Trading Center in the district to deposit the cash into value but the agent refused after realising that the notes were counterfeit.
Inspector Lubrino said well wishers tipped the police who rushed to the scene where they arrested the suspect.
The police have henceforth confiscated the fake notes.
