Usi: Not an MCP Member, But Confident in Chakwera’s Leadership

Vice President Michael Usi has not officially joined the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), despite public speculation following his recent remarks during a whistle-stop tour in Mwanza. Usi, who remains a senior member of the UTM Party, has clarified that his comments reflect satisfaction with President Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership, not a shift in political allegiance.

On Monday, Usi stated, “Boma ndi lomweli”—a phrase many interpreted as an endorsement of the MCP-led government.

Analysts Share Divergent Views

Political Scientist George Phiri believes Usi’s remarks could be a strategic move to position himself closer to MCP. “Though a UTM member, Usi’s pre-political activities and statements often aligned with MCP ideologies. This could be part of a broader plan to integrate with MCP,” Phiri said.

On the other hand, Political Commentator Chimwemwe Tsitsi dismissed the notion of Usi defecting to MCP. “As Vice President, Usi is committed to the government’s agenda. His statements reflect confidence in the leadership under Chakwera, not a change in his political standing,” Tsitsi explained.

UTM Yet to Respond

The UTM Party has not commented on Usi’s remarks, despite multiple attempts by Avant Publications to get their reaction.

Usi’s confidence in the MCP-led government appears to contrast with UTM’s recent divergence from the Tonse Alliance. However, Usi’s position suggests he believes MCP deserves another chance to deliver on its promises. His statement, “Boma ndi lomweli,” indicates he lacks confidence in opposition parties such as the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), UTM, People’s Party (PP), and Alliance for Democracy (Aford).

For now, Usi remains firmly within the government, advocating for the continued leadership of President Chakwera.
