MCP DEMANDS IN KARONGA, SWEPT UNDER RUG

Earlier today on 1 April, The Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission, Dr Chifundo Kachale declined a plea from Mr Daniel Chitonya of MCP in the just ended by elections in Karonga North West Constituency, where UTM Candidate Mr Felix Kwataff Kayira has been declared winner.

In his words Dr Kachari said “The commission received a complaint from Mr Daniel Chitonya,
Candidate of the Malawi Congress Party in Karonga North West Constituency.The Candidate is seeking
disqualification of the UTM candidate, Mr Felix Katwaff Kayira for allegedly being responsible for the violence and intimidation against the Malawi Congress Party, its members and voters. In the alternative Mr Chitonya has demanded that a fresh election be held in the
Constituency and the UTM Candidate should not participate. He has also demanded a recount of votes cast in some mentioned centres on account of wrong tallying. Mr Chitonya has since been guided on
how the alleged criminal offences should be dealt with.The complainant has not provided the Commission with any evidence of wrong tallying of results in any of the centres.Therefore, the commission has declined to order a recount in the Constituency or in
any of the centres and a response to that effect has been dispatched the candidate.” End of quote

Karonga west was among the worst area marked with massive violence as both candidates of  UTM and MCP, whom seek refuge under the umbrella of Tonse alliance, run into a physical disagreement where a number of innocent people suistained minor degrees injuries.

Political commentators rebuked the Development as old factioned, uncalled for and must be rebuked at all cost.

Most quarters has it that both MCP and UTM Candidates shoulders the blame for the violence that erupted and if irregularities are to be proven as well. But MCP’s candidate failed to sustain the required evidence to support his plea before MEC. , activating MEC there from to proceed declaring UTM Candidate the legitimate law maker elect for the Constituency
