MALAWI RE-ENERGISING RELATIONS WITH ISRAEL: CHAKWERA

President Dr  Chakwera told parliament that Malawi was re-energising relations with Israel for the benefit of the country.
He said the Jewish state  was a “great nation and a leader in human endeavours in such areas as agriculture, value addition and science.”
Chakwera was answering a question from DPP MP Mark Botomani
The Malawi leader said Israel and Malawi have been “strongest partners” since independence in 1964.
He said the relations were “well grounded in our own national interest.”
He said Malawi, as a member of the United Nations, was also interested in the peaceful settlement of Israel and Palestine.
“We are also for a two-nation solution,” Chakwera said. “This goes very well with our foreign policy thrust.”
He said Malawi was not receiving any pressure from anywhere on its relations with Israel.
“We conduct our foreign policy on the basis of mutual respect and based on international law.”
The President said “time now is ripe for Malawi to take its role in international relations.”-
Chakwera says the Nsanje Inland Port is not a priority right now.  He says government plans to rehabilitate the Marka to Mozambique railway line so that it becomes functional again.

GOVERNMENT TO REVIEW ALL LAND LAWS

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says all land laws in the country should be reviewed so that there’s sanity in land acquisition, administration and disposal.
The President made the remarks in Parliament on Wednesday in response to questions from Legislators in the house.
The Malawi leader said “the country’s land management system is broken and it has to be revisited.”
The President said it is very true that some of the structures in our cities are an eyesore but since “these are contentious issues we will take all necessary steps to address the situation.”
He said the Land Commission is not rendered irrelevant and it will be instrumental in championing the reforms in the area.
The President said the culture of corruption and bureaucracy  scares  off investors and this should be a thing of the past.
“I can assure you that even chiefs in Mzimba brought a petition in this regard saying  they were not  fully consulted on land laws that were passed by this house. So we will ensure all these issues are looked into and  amendments are brought in the next sitting of Parliament,” said the Malawi leader.
The President said Kudzigulira Malo Project was also launched to ease land wrangles in some hotspots like Thyolo and Mulanje.
During the administrations of Ngwazi Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda and Dr Bakili Muluzi,  a ‘Red Star Campaign’ was commissioned to remove structures that have outlived their use
