Police urge Traditional Chiefs to lead fight against crime and road accidents

The Police through the Community Policing Branch from the Central West Region and Kawale Police Station, on Friday, July 17, 2026, urged traditional chiefs in Kang’oma to take a leading role in combating crime and reducing road accidents.

Speaking during a meeting held at Traditional Authority Tsabango’s headquarters, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) for Kawale Police Station, Mr. Marco Dawson Mvukuta, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) encouraged chiefs to be more active in maintaining security within their communities.

He called on traditional leaders to establish and strengthen Community Policing Forums that would work closely with law enforcement officers in their respective villages.

“Security is a shared responsibility. As we do our part, rise and do yours so that together we can meet the growing security demands,” said Mvukuta.

He further condemned the tendency of attacking the elderly on witchcraft accusations that results into murder cases.He therefore appealed for their protection and that of people living with albinism.

Superintendent Mike Simika shared various security tips aimed at empowering chiefs to effectively support the police in preventing crime and maintaining peace, order, and authority within their communities.

Addressing road safety, Superintendent Clenford Mugala expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents, mainly which involve kabaza motorcycle operators. He attributed the accidents to violations of road traffic laws, including carrying more than one passenger, riding without crash helmets, and operating motorcycles while under the influence of alcohol. He urged all road users, including pedestrians, to strictly observe traffic rules and regulations.

Inspector Grace Chinyama from the Central West Region also strongly condemned child marriages, gender-based violence, and mob justice, urging community leaders to work closely with the police in preventing such crimes.

Inspector Dinna Mauaboma and Sub-Inspector Augustine Kaisi from Kawale Police Station and CWR respectively emphasized the need to end early marriages and encourage parents to fulfil their responsibilities in protecting children.

Sub-Inspector Humphrey Njolomore presented an overview of the crime trends in Kang’oma and surrounding villages. He stressed that chiefs and community members must work hand in hand with the police to address criminal activities before they escalate.

Speaking on behalf of Senior Chief Tsabango, Senior Group Village Tsabango expressed gratitude to Kawale Police Station for organizing what he described as an eye-opening meeting. He encouraged all participants to put the messages into practice and share the knowledge with their subjects to promote safer and more secure communities.
