Police impound 16 motorcycles for violating traffic regulations

In a bid to enforce motorcycle registration and reduce road accidents in the district, Mangochi Police embarked on an intensive traffic check where 16 motorcycles have been impounded for violating Road Traffic Act.

The initiative rolled out in the afternoon of May 21, 2021 at Bakili Muluzi Highway.

Traffic police in the district manned a number of places along said road to ensure that road users are following road safety measures.

The traffic checks targeted motorcyclists most of whom are negligent on the road, hence they become victims of avoidable road accidents.

Additionally, it is difficult to trace the offenders when they are involved in hit and run accidents since most of the motorcycles are not registered.

Among the impounded are uninsured motorcycles, unregistered motorcycles, driving without licence and crush helmets.

Out of 11 road accidents registered so far in the five months of 2021, four motorcyclists are among the ten people who have lost their lives through the accidents.

This is the fourth operation of its kind which the traffic law enforcers have conducted along the roads of the district.

Apparently, collaboration between Police and department of road traffic, has led to registration of 25 motorcycles since the initiative started, a development authorities have described as progressive.

The motorcyclists will appear before the court to answer the charges after paperwork is completed.

The initiative will continue targeting the motorists until sanity is reinstalled on the roads of the district.
