The lnspector General (IG) of Police Dr George Kainja has advised women in uniform not to present themselves as victims or incapable of anything that will give room to their male counterparts to abuse them sexually.
The call was made on December 11, 2021 in the IG’s boardroom at the National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe where he interacted with new regime of National Police Women Network.
Speaking to the grouping, the IG reminded the women in uniform that the women platform was created with an aim to promote women empowerment and ensure gender mainstreaming and equality in the MPS.
The lG has committed to fully support the women platform among others helping with financial resources.
However he urged the executive committee to radiate, champion, promote and enforce discipline amongst female officers at all times which is a bedrock of Policing.
“Most women have low esteem and they think they cannot excel in the service without the help of a senior male officer but it’s a tendency that a lot of female officers tend to have an inferiority complex,” he said.
Kainja also warned the grouping to use the ICT by enhancing Policing duties and not advancing moral turpitude.
In her speech the Deputy lnspector General of Police responsible for Administration Mrs Merlyn Yolamu pleaded with her fellow women to safeguard and protect the image of MPS and strategize to bring back sanity in the service.
Yolamu condemned some women in uniform who indulge into sexual relationship with senior officers to gain favours.
She also encouraged them to upgrade their academic qualifications in order to climb the ladders in the service.
Echoing the same, the Chairperson for the Network Jessie Nyirongo Assistant Commissioner of Police who is also Anti-Motor Vehicle in-charge promised to execute the Police duties according to management expectations and for the common good of the citizenry.

However, Nyirongo pleaded with the IG to follow the 40/60 percentage of female law enforcers in the MPS to match with the standards of gender equality.
In his response the Police chief assured the women that the incoming recruitment will have a good representation of women.
The new executive committee was elected last month at Police Cottage in Mangochi.
