Accidental Police Shooting at Chipoka Roadblock Claims Life of Passenger

Salima, Malawi – A routine checkpoint turned into a tragedy on the evening of December 7, 2024, when Jeremiah Maluwa, a 46-year-old passenger, was fatally shot in what police have described as an accidental shooting. The incident occurred at the Chipoka Roadblock in Salima District, following an attempt by the driver of a Toyota Sienta to evade a police search.

According to reports, the checkpoint had been set up as part of an intensified operation to curb illegal activities, based on intelligence regarding the transportation of contraband goods. At approximately 7:00 PM, officers signaled the vehicle, driven by 39-year-old Ignacio Gostino, to stop for inspection. Instead, Gostino allegedly sped past the roadblock, narrowly missing an officer and knocking over a traffic cone.

In response to the driver’s defiance, Constable Kelvin Newa discharged warning shots, aiming at the vehicle’s tyres to bring it to a halt. Tragically, one of the bullets penetrated the rear windscreen and struck Maluwa, who was seated inside. Passengers reportedly alerted Gostino to the victim’s critical condition, prompting the driver to stop the car approximately 600 meters from the roadblock.

Police officers at the scene immediately transported Maluwa to Chipoka Health Centre, where medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a 50-kilogram bag of cannabis, further complicating the situation.

Authorities have detained Gostino as investigations proceed. Maluwa’s body has been moved to the Salima District Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem examination is scheduled for December 9 to determine the exact cause of death.

Meanwhile, the police have assured the public of a thorough review of the incident. “This tragic loss of life is deeply regrettable,” said a senior police official. “We are committed to ensuring accountability and taking measures to prevent such incidents in the future.”

The case has sparked widespread concern, with community members calling for better training and stricter protocols for law enforcement officers during high-stress operations. Further details are expected as investigations unfold.
