Police at Kamwendo in Mchinji are keeping in custody a 30-year-old man, Isaac Duncan for allegedly stealing property belonging to Electricity Supplies Cooperation of Malawi (ESCOM).
The arrest follows a tip police detectives received from concerned community members at Waliranji Trading centre that the suspect, who they say has been posing as an ESCOM official, has allegedly been conducting illegal electricity connections in the area.
The suspect who was arrested while in ESCOM regalia, admitted to have stolen the company’s three prepaid meters, forged a receipt book and a work suit.
The suspect is said to have installed electricity within the trading centre with stolen prepaid meters.
Duncan will appear in court soon to answer three charges of theft, impersonation and forgery.
He hails from Masaula Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba.
Police in Mchinji are urging the public to avoid vandalising ESCOM property.
