LMC to Chair SADC in 2021

SADC leaders have proposed President Dr Lazarus Chakwera as the one to take over the SADC Chairperson mantle in 2021.

This was disclosed during the 40th ordinary SADC summit that was done through the internet yesterday, Monday as a measure to curb the spread of the novel Corona Virus Disease pandemic commonly known as Covid 19.

The grouping also elected Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi as the new Chairperson,to lead SADC in the year 2020, taking over from President John Magufuli of Tanzania.

The theme of the summit is “40 Years Building Peace and Security and Promoting Development and Resilience in the Face of Global Challenges”.

Dr Chakwera said that alot needs tp be done as the grouping still lags behind in failing to intervene in various situations in the region. He cited the case of a political impasse that locked Malawi after the disputed 2019 Presidential elections. SADC did nothing but just to watch from a distance.

Meanwhile, Malawi is expected to host the 41st ordinary SADC summit In August 2021.
