14 people have been killed in a terrorist attack in the West African country of Nigeria.
This incident of loss of life occurred in separate attacks in the northern part of the country on Sunday. Two army personnel are also among the dead.
Apart from this, the gunmen kidnapped at least 60 people including women and children after the attack. This information was reported by Reuters on Monday.
In Nigeria, gunmen killed eight people and later kidnapped at least 60 others in the country’s northwestern Zamfara province on Sunday, a resident and local leader said.
The incident came two days after armed terrorists abducted dozens of people from a university in the province.
On the other hand, in the north-east of the country, suspected Islamist insurgents ambushed a convoy of vehicles under military security. Two soldiers and four civilians were killed, a police source and a motorist who witnessed the attack said.
Reuters says President Bola Tinubu has yet to articulate how he will deal with the widespread insecurity in his country. His economic reform plan, including the removal of costly fuel subsidies, has raised the cost of living and has practically sparked outrage among the country’s citizens.
Residents said gunmen attempted to attack an army base in Zamfara’s rural Magami community early Sunday morning, but failed.
Zamfara province has been virtually wracked by the rampage of armed gang members locally known as dakats. Terrorists kidnap common people for ransom there.
A leader, who did not want to be named for security reasons, said gunmen in three groups attacked army bases and the communities of Magami and Kabasa. He said 60 people were abducted, most of them women and children.
According to officials of the Nigerian security forces, in addition to armed terrorists, members of the militant group Boko Haram and IS (Islamic State) West African branch also regularly carry out these criminal activities.
Incidentally, for the past 14 years, members of the country’s security forces have been fighting against the Nigerian-based militant group Boko Haram and the international terrorist group IS.
