DRY TAPS-RESIDENTS SURVIVE ON STAGNANT WATER

Residents around Chigwirizano township in Lilongwe are experiencing drought due to lack of water supply, taps are dry today is the third day. It seems there is a big blockage on their feeder pipes somewhere around the area since the neighboring areas such as Likuni and Chinsapo are supplied.

Residents are surviving on the stagnant water fetching from Likuni River. Our reporter moved around the affected areas and the site where the residents are drawing water and found out that it is really pathetic and unhealthy for the residents as the situation threatens their lives and risk to cholera outbreak. “I don’t know what has happened I just found out that water isn’t there three days ago, it’s painful to us we are walking almost 700m to fetch water from that small river which has dried only that there are some sites which has stagnant water which we are using for other household chores including bathing” Bertha Kabwazi explained.

Efforts to talk to Lilongwe water board did not workout. Avantmalawi wishes to bring to the attention of the water provider to trace the problem and fix it to ease the situation.
