Government considers privatizing Bingu National Stadium to rescue it from further poor management and the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) discloses that discussions on the matter are underway, hoping to reach agreement with a private company soon enough.
PPPC Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Kabambe, told the audience at the on going panel discussion on financing the Malawi 2063 first 10 year implementation plan following concerns raised by a participant as to why government is not involving the private sector as the multibillion kwacha facility deteriorates without fully serving its core purpose.
Suggestions made include selling of naming rights of the stadium and changing operational model to fully commercialize the stadium. Currently, the stadium is run by government and has standard issues as most of the facilities are in poor state and cannot self-finance to cover utility and other bills as FIFA cannot certify it to host international games.
