Mulanje Police publicist Gresham Ngwira has identified the two as Luka Bwanali, 31 and Daniel Juwalo, 25.
Ngwira said they got a tip on Sunday from well wishers that the two were in possession of a pangolin which is a protected wild animal at Limbuli Trading Centre in Muloza in the district.
He said working on the information, police officers and officials from the department of National Parks posed as potential buyers and arrested the two suspects in the process, the live pangolin was also rescued.
According to Ngwira the suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges of found in possession of specimen of listed species and dealing in government trophy.
However, police in Mulanje is encouraging the general public to give tips to them to strengthen community safety and security.
The suspects Luka Bwanali and Daniel Juwalo hail from Takhiwa village in the area of Traditional Authority Njema in Mulanje district.
According to the National Geographic, Pangolin scales, like rhino horn, have no proven medicinal value, yet they are used in traditional Chinese medicine to help with ailments ranging from lactation difficulties to arthritis.
The scales typically dried and ground up into powder, which may be turned into a pill.
