TEACHER’S UNION OF MALAWI STUBBORN, SCHOOL CALENDAR GETS AFFECTED

Just as the mother body of Teacher’s (TUM) pleaded with Ministry of Education for months now.

It is evident that Teacher’s have taken head of TUM directive to resume their stay away this morning over what they call unfulfilled Promise by Ministry of Education to provide Cash for personal protective Equipment.

At Chakhanga, Kasungu and Chipala Primary school in Lilongwe, thousands of learners returned home on forced “holiday” as Teacher’s could not discharge their duties.

In Nsanje, our reporter Martin Gela Jnr says teachers have not reported for work in schools like Bangula, Mpisamanja and Kaombe Primary Schools which are under Bangula zone.

The case is also the same at Nsanje Catholic, Nyamadzere, Dinde and Kapalakonje Primary Schools.

In Blantyre, schools such as Chichiri primary and secondary schools, learners are only seen loitering around as teachers have not availed themselves for work.

Speaking to different head teachers and Teacher’s they admit that Schemes of work, lesson plans and School Calendars are heavily affected.

One Teacher name withheld, commented “Teacher’s Union of Malawi and Ministry of Education must sit and agree one thing as we are bond to adhere to their directives, we came here to teach as per our lesson planning only to be told there is a stay away. However, as an educated person I can’t proceed teaching when my employer does not value Teacher’s welfare.” He commented

Riots erupted in Mzuzu and Blantyre where learners refused to sit home without lessons. They called upon government to bring a long lasting solution to end their Teacher’s stay away

Teacher’s strike comes barely days after Malawi as a nation evidenced poor outcomes of Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) with the lowest pass rate of 41%. This Development is a sign that we as a nation have poor structures to standard education.

Ministry of Education is yet to comment the way forward on the matter
