An ode to the man! Rev. Dr. Edward Jailosi Chitsonga
As a young man, brought up in Police Lines, there was one officer I used to admire most!
Each time I visited any police clinic, be it in Zomba, Area 30 or Kanjedza Police Clinic, there was one man who would make your visit to the hospital always memorable.
Clad in a neat Police Uniform and donning a white dustcoat he would always sway you with his big smile. I grew up not knowing his real name. He was a “Doctor” and to me that was enough.
He rose through the ranks of the then Police Force so much that even at a higher rank like that of Assistant Commissioner of Police- ACP, he was still our humble “Doctor”
Something strange happened to our “Doctor” he started behaving strangely! Apart from prescribing the usual Panadol or dressing wounds with GV, the doctor was also prescribing Christ to the patients.
During lunch hours and his free time he would go preach Christ in markets whilst donning a Senior Police Officers full Uniform.
We were all shocked when our “Doctor” announced he was leaving the Police Force to the Bible School after accepting the Lord’s call to ministry!
What followed thereafter is a story for another day. Within the Malawi Assemblies of God family where he started ministering, the “Doctor” was a darling to so many. He led so many souls to Christ.
When the Current State President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera decided to join politics and consequently resigning from his position as the head of the Malawi Assemblies of God, delegates to the Assemblies of God Extra Ordinary Convention agreed to allow our “Doctor” put on the big-sized shoes left by Dr. Laz!
As the remains of the late Doctor Edward Jailosi Chitsonga, (God’s dedicated General) will be interred today all I can say is fare thee well “My Doctor”!
