AIRTEL MALAWI LINKS INTERNET CHALLENGES TO FOREX CRISIS

By Vinjeru Ngwira

The shortage of foreign exchange in Malawi has been cited as one of the major factors affecting efforts to improve internet connectivity and network stability, Board Chairperson Kaisi Sadala has said.

Sadala made the remarks on Friday during the official opening of Airtel Malawi’s new office at Hope Square in Mzuzu.

According to Sadala, the telecommunications company has been facing serious challenges in sourcing foreign currency needed to import critical equipment required for network expansion and modernization.

He said the delays in acquiring the necessary equipment have contributed to the persistent internet disruptions and intermittent network challenges currently being experienced by customers in different parts of the country.

Despite the challenges, Sadala said Airtel Malawi remains committed to improving communication services and expanding network coverage, especially in rural areas. He added that the company is exploring alternative solutions such as satellite technology to strengthen connectivity and reduce reliance on traditional network towers.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Mayor for Mzuzu, Chiyembekezo Mvula, commended Airtel Malawi for its continued investment in the country, saying the company plays an important role in creating employment and supporting business growth through reliable telecommunications services.
