Mtambo Rejects AFORD-DPP Alliance

Timothy Mtambo, the Deputy President of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), has expressed strong disappointment over his party’s recent alliance with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), saying he cannot support a party that once failed the country.

Speaking during a press briefing held at Ufulu Garden in Lilongwe, Mtambo clarified that his stance does not mean he has left AFORD or that he sees his party leader, Enock Chihana, as a bad person. However, he strongly disagrees with the decision to join hands with DPP.

Mtambo accused the DPP of poor leadership during its time in power between 2014 and 2019, claiming the party failed to bring any meaningful change and caused widespread frustration among Malawians. He added that the DPP has not shown any sign of transformation since then.

He further criticized the DPP for choosing Jane Ansah as the running mate to Peter Mutharika for the upcoming elections. According to Mtambo, Ansah played a controversial role during the 2019 elections when she served as the head of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), which led to mass protests across the country.

“I cannot stand on a political platform to support a party that failed us, nor can I support Jane Ansah who messed up the 2019 elections,” said Mtambo.

He also revealed that during DPP’s rule, his life was at risk, and he cannot support people who once wanted him dead.

Mtambo concluded by urging Malawians to reject the alliance, saying they deserve better and more responsible leadership.
