Michael Usi Denies Leaving UTM, Says He Was Expelled

The Vice President of Malawi, Michael Usi, has clarified that he did not voluntarily leave the United Transformation Movement (UTM) party, but was instead expelled.

“I said let me clear the air. I did not leave UTM; I was expelled, and those people are still there. It’s not that I hate them, but the truth will come out,” explained Usi.

He further emphasized, “I want to clarify this because the media keeps saying I left, but the truth is I was kicked out.”

Usi made these remarks in Phalombe during the funeral of the late Alex Joseph Mulli, who was the brother of Leston Mulli, the head of Mulli Brothers Holdings Limited (MBL).

He was responding to a sermon delivered at the ceremony by Reverend Billy Gama of the CCAP Church, who criticized the hypocrisy often seen among political leaders in the country.

Usi stated that he holds no grudges against anyone in politics.
“There is not a single politician, even in UTM, that I go to bed wishing ill upon,” he said.

Usi first clashed publicly with UTM leadership, including the party’s leader Dalitso Kabambe, after he was expelled from the party in December last year.

UTM had announced that Usi was dismissed due to reasons such as attempting to divide the party and allegedly not supporting the leadership of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Usi had served as the vice president of UTM, and after the passing of UTM leader Saulos Klaus Chilima in June last year, he temporarily took over as the acting leader of the party.
