Three businessmen have died while four others sustained serious injuries after the motor vehicle they were travelling in hit a tree due to overspeeding on the early hours of June 8, 2024 at Namiyasi Trading Centre along Mangochi-Monkey-Bay Road.
The deceased(well-known fresh fish sellers) have been identified as Karim Steven, 42, Wasili Nakoma, 38, and Stanley Chiwanda, 47.
The accident which involved a Toyota Pick-up registration number NS 9533 was being driven by Michael Damiano, 38, from the direction of Monkey-bay heading towards Mangochi en-route to Blantyre with 10 passengers on board.
Upon arrival at Namiyasi Trading Centre due to overspeeding, Damiano lost control of the motor vehicle and swerved to the offside of the road where he rested in the tree.
Following the impact the three passengers now deceased each sustained head injuries and died upon arrival at Mangochi District Hospital.
The other four sustained various degrees of injuries and have been admitted at the same facility while three passengers and the driver escaped with minor injuries.
Police in the district are appealing to the drivers to always follow road safety measures to avoid such accidents.
Steven and Nakoma both hailed from Steven village, Traditional Authority Chowe in Mangochi while Chiwanda hailed from Chipalamawamba village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.
