Two ex-convicts arrested for illegal possession of firearm

Police at Namwera in Mangochi have arrested two ex-convicts for being found in possession of with a RETAY pistol firearm and two live rounds of ammunition on June 5, 2024, within Namwera Trading Centre.

The two have been identified as Bashir Ayami, 20, and Mustapha Antonio Stanley, 34, both from Traditional Authority Jalasi in Mangochi.

According to police records, the first suspect, Bashir Ayami, has been on the run after he escaped from Mangochi Prison in March 2024, while the second suspect, Mustapha Antonio Stanley, was also once convicted for committing robbery.

It is reported that on the said date, police were tipped off by members of the community that the suspects were possessing the offensive weapon within Namwera.

Eventually, a team of detectives rushed to the place and arrested the duo who were found with the said pistol, serial number R1YGCPRYS01-2300846, and two rounds of ammunition.

The second suspect was also found with a bicycle and confessed to having stolen it at Nsanama in Machinga District.

During interrogations, the first suspect revealed that after escaping from prison, he went to South Africa where he teamed up with the second suspect and other robbers but came back to the country after stealing the pistol.

Meanwhile, Ayami has been charged with escaping from lawful custody and possession of a firearm without a permit, while Stanley will answer charges of possession of a firearm without a permit and theft.
