Police officers have been urged to leverage their roles in combatting wildlife and environmental crimes, as emphasized by Mr. Dennis Chipao, Commissioner of Police and Director of Human Resource and Management. At a two-day workshop on December 6, 2023, attended by 34 detectives from various police formations, Chipao stressed the importance of following laws to address these crimes effectively.
During the workshop at Police Cottage in Mangochi, Chipao advised participants to grasp the significance of the event for their profession, encouraging them to draw lessons and devise strategies to overcome challenges they face in their roles.
Chipao commended the Malawi Police Service (MPS) for their accomplishments in 2023, highlighting successful efforts in apprehending wildlife crime perpetrators and raising awareness among the public about the importance of preserving natural vegetation.
In his remarks Frank Zoto, Project Manager at Lilongwe Wildlife Trust, expressed gratitude for the positive collaboration between the trust and the police. He noted improvements in people’s understanding of the need to protect natural resources and address encroachment, emphasizing the ongoing necessity for increased awareness.
Superintendent Wellington Chimdzakazi, head of the Wildlife and Environmental Crimes Investigation Unit based at the National Police Headquarters, spoke on behalf of the participants.
He expressed excitement about learning more on the regulatory framework protecting forests in Malawi. Chimdzakazi also emphasized the officers’ duty to safeguard natural resources, enforce laws, and prevent criminal violations by informing and educating the public on wildlife and environmental regulations.
