CHARCOAL BURNING RATE INCREASES

The department of forestry and wild life in the country has shown concerns over the increase of Charcoal burning.

The increase depicts low income levels that Malawians can not afford using electricity and other energy cooking sources.

In an interview with one of the Charcoal burner, a Mr Andraye he says unemployment is another factor that forces them to make Charcoal to sustain a living.

“My child was selected to university and the only way of raising fees is by Farming and making Charcoal. Yes, we face alot of difficulties to ferry our bags into towns where prices are competitive such as traveling long distances and at times we are robbed off in transit” he said.

Malawi as a developing country has three major cooking sources, electricity, Charcoal and gas. However, Charcoal is the most used source of heating energy in moderate homes.

The department of forestry is therefore advising people the pros and cons of using Charcoal and how they can access gas and electricity, so as to minimise the high levels deforestation.
