Crime decreases by 12 % in Mangochi

Mangochi Police Station has registered a decrease in crime by 12 percent in the just ended year of 2021 which is a positive development in policing matters.

According to crime annual report which the Station has released, the 12 percent decline in overall crime was registered from January to December 2021.

In the year 2020 a total number of 2,026  criminal cases were recorded while in 2021 the station registered 1,773 cases.

The statistics also showed that sexual offences have slightly trailed down in the district . In 2020 only 94 cases of defilement were registered  compared to 92 which had been reported in the just ended year.

Meanwhile,  Police have noted with great concern that most of the perpetrators of defilement are close relatives especially stepfathers.

However the report has also singled out the tendency of concealing such cases when the defiler is of family relations as one of the challenges in the pursuit of justice in court.

Despite challenges in curbing other offences, the police successfully recovered various stolen items, arrested criminals, 770 cases have been completed and 557 perpetrators out of the figures were given stiffer penalties in courts and are serving jail terms.

The station is confident and geared to continue in the reduction of the crime as the convictions and imprisonments have played a bigger role in lowering levels of crime.

On road accidents, in 2020 Mangochi Police Station registered 204 road accidents and 58 people were reported dead while in 2021, 40 people lost their lives out of 137 road accidents.

Apart from Traffic Police day and night visibility, the introduction of community traffic wardens in the accident prone areas has also played a bigger role in the reduction of road accidents.

Mangochi Police Station has addressed the above crimes by continuing to implement different crime detection and preventative strategies such as an increase in police visibility day and night, joint patrols with members of the Community Policing Forums in the crime prone areas, strategic points duties, border patrols, road safety awareness through the media especially community radios in the district and most importantly the good relationship between the police and members of the public to ease policing.

The station is assuring the public that they will continue with the measures to make Mangochi a safe haven.

Therefore Police wishes to extend their gratitude to all stakeholders, judicial system and members of the public for their support in fighting against crime.
