The anticipation is palpable in Mzuzu as the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Mzuzu district football league gears up for its 2023 edition, set to commence on November 18. The recently held interface meeting at Luwinga Youth Center with team representatives has unveiled a promising lineup of 14 teams, drawn into four competitive groups.
In Group A, powerhouses Horoya FC, Engutwini, and Baula Celtic will battle for supremacy. Meanwhile, Group B features a clash of titans with Chikago FC, Zolozolo Rangers FC, and Geisha FC vying for the top spot. Group C presents a mix of seasoned teams including Sonda United, Prison United FC, Moyale Reserve FC, and Bishop FC. Group D rounds out the competition with Young Rangers FC, Nambo FC, Eagle Strikers, and Daily Academy set to showcase their prowess on the field.
The stakes are high this year, thanks to a generous 3 million sponsorship from the Football Association of Malawi. The champions of the league will walk away with a significant K1 million, while the runners-up and third-placed teams will earn K400 thousand and K200 thousand, respectively. Additionally, the top goal scorer will be rewarded with K50 thousand.
Discipline takes center stage as emphasized by Alphalk Mkandawire, the General Secretary of the Mzuzu District Football Association. He sternly warned teams against indiscipline, stating that it will not be tolerated. Mkandawire anticipates stiff competition among the teams and looks forward to the discovery of new talents during the league.
Echoing the excitement is Macbeth Wasambo, the coach for Mzuzu Prison United FC. Wasambo expressed his delight at being part of the tournament and assured that his team is ready to make their mark in the league. He emphasized the significance of the competition in providing a platform for inmates to showcase their talents, highlighting the positive impact such events can have on rehabilitation.
