Two people have been apprehended in Blantyre for allegedly killing and burrying a poliomyelitic girl in Machinjiri, Blantyre.
They are identified as Chifundo Gladys Matapira 39 who is the biological mother of the 11 year old Talandira Matapira (now deceased) and Harrison Nyasulu 33 who is a traditional doctor.
Police were notified of the missing girl in February, 2020 by the deceased’s biological father Kondwani Matapira.
At the time the girl went missing, the reporter was out of the country for other engagements in Tanzania.
Police picked Chifundo Matapira for questioning over the missing child. She told the law enforcers that the girl was in the hands of Nyasulu for treatment.
Efforts to trace Nyasulu and the girl proved futile as he had escaped to undisclosed location.
Chifundo was then granted Police bail while investigators were still pursuing the matter.
It was until July 26, 2020 when Nyasulu was arrested at Uliwa in Karonga that the Police re-arrested the mother.
Quizzed on the whereabouts of the girl Talandira Matapira, both the traditional healer and the mother kept pushing it on each other until August 8, 2020 when the two confessed that she was buried within the fence of Matapira’s house in Machinjiri Area 1.
Police detectives were led to the burial place by the two.
The police exhumed the remains of the deceased only to find bones.
The bones were taken to Queen Elizabeth Central hospital for Forensic examination.
A report on the results of the examination is yet to be produced.
Circumstances on how the girl died remain unknown as both the mother and the traditional doctor are yet to disclose to the law enforcers.
The two have since been charged with murder contrary to section 209 of the penal code and will appear in court on Tuesday 11, 2020.
Chifundo Gladys Matapira hails from Chidengu village traditional authority Timbiri in Nkhata-Bay, while Nyasulu comes from Mwakashunguli village traditional authority Mwerang’ombe in Karonga.
