Blantyre Teachers Training College (BTTC) students are at risk of getting waterborne diseases following water shortages that have hit the college campus.
A visit by avantmalawi at the campus in the afternoon of 16th March 2021, revealed that more than 800 students are struggling to source water from the only borehole within the institution’s premises.
According to interviews conducted by avantmalawi, BTTC Students Union President, Prince Ntukula, and a female student, Chifundo Khwala, indicate that the problem has been worse for three days now.
They said the challenge has led many students failing to take bath and use flash toilets.
Ntukula said they have petitioned management on the same.
The college’s Deputy Principal, Mrs Jumbe, refused to grant any interview and directed avantmalawi reporters to the Ministry of Education’s spokesperson.
However, one of the lecturers attributed the problem to a faulty electricity transformer which has affected the water pump.
He said management was locked in a meeting on Tuesday morning to discuss possible ways of solving the problem.
Blantyre Teacher’s Training College is among the oldest Colleges that produces top notch primary school teachers that are contributing to the well being of Malawi’s education.
