Woman arrested for assaulting stepson over Mandasi

Police in Mangochi have arrested Daina Bauleni, 30, for allegedly assaulting her 7-year-old stepson, knocking out his front tooth, after he ate three mandasi instead of one meant for his breakfast.

The incident occurred on March 18, 2025, at Mgundaphiri Village under Traditional Authority Mapira in Mangochi.

According to a well-wisher who reported the case, Bauleni had been mistreating the child whenever her husband was away on business. On the day of the incident, upon discovering that the boy had eaten extra mandasi, she whipped him severely with a large stick, knocking out one of his front teeth.

The child also sustained bruises on both arms and had visible stick marks on his back, with blood covering his mouth.

The well-wisher rescued the boy and reported the matter to Mangochi Police Station. He was taken to Mangochi District Hospital for medical attention, and Bauleni was later arrested.

She has since been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and will appear in court soon.

Bauleni hails from Mgundaphiri Village, Traditional Authority Mponda, in Mangochi.
