VP TO ATTEND 21ST COMESA SUMMIT IN EGYPT

The Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima is scheduled to attend the 21st Common Market for the Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Summit of Heads of State and Government on Tuesday, 23 November in Egypt.

Among other issues, the meeting seeks to revive economies from the destructive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, through the adoption of transformative digital technologies.

The disruptive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is far-reaching. Goods are also at times taking forever, to reach their destinations.

Reduced trade volumes have lowered money circulation. It is a development that has effectively slowed down the global economy.

This is partly why countries in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa are now set for Cairo in Egypt.

The agenda is to discuss regional reforms to restore and expand inter-country trade. They will also work on addressing trade challenges created by the pandemic.

Party to the Summit will be Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima. Malawian Ambassador to Egypt, Caroline Bwanali says all is set for the summit.

“We are excited for being part and parcel of this beneficial summit, countries indeed need to share notes on how to curb the effects brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and Malawi will surely benefit a great deal, said the Ambassador.

The last COMESA Summit was held in Lusaka Zambia in 2018.

During the Summit, President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-sisi is expected to take over the COMESA chairmanship from his Madagascar counterpart, President Andry Rajoelina.

The Summit will be held under the theme: ‘Building resilience through strategic digital economic integration.’
