Three people have been swept away by rains while crossing flooded Mwanza river near Beleu Trading Center in Chikwawa district.
Those washed away are a woman, young girl and a man.
A group of Illovo workers, fish mongers and people from Nchalo traveling to Blantyre agreed to cross the burst river.
The trio was washed away in the course of the journey. As this was not enough two Banja La Mtsogolo vehicles, Nissan Patrol & Toyota Land Cruiser took the risk as well.

The first vehicle was washed away but fortunately saved by shrubs and some trees.
However, its four occupants, three men and a lady managed to climb on top where they were rescued by some courageous Illovo employees by pulling them with a rope.
The latter was swayed a few meters away from Mwanza river and its two occupants, a man and a lady managed to come out unhurt.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa has asked president Lazarus Chakwera to declare a state of Disaster following the flooding which has left hundreds of Malawians destitute in various parts of the country.
Nankhumwa thinks this will facilitate and attract humanitarian assistance for reconstruction and rehabilitation.
“We now call upon the President to urgently provide food items and shelter to flood survivors,” says Nankhumwa adding that EGENCO and ESCOM should work fast to restore power.
