All preparations are in place for the Tour de Dwangwa cycling race, set for Sunday, November 17, 2024. The annual event will bring together cyclists of varying skill levels to compete in one of Malawi’s most popular cycling competitions.

Dyson Mpeketula, chairman of Round Table Dwangwa 69 and a lead organizer for the event, confirmed that the response has been very positive. Mpeketula highlighted that they have registered around 90 local cyclists so far, mostly from kabaza operators. He expects an additional 30 professional riders, aiming to have over 200 participants on race day.

Registration has shown strong interest among local communities and cycling enthusiasts. Mpeketula expressed confidence that, by Sunday, they would reach or even exceed their registration target. This year’s event promises a competitive lineup, with a mix of local and professional cyclists preparing to participate.

Sponsors have also stepped up to support the 2024 race. Illovo Sugar Malawi has donated K25 million, while Ethanol Company has contributed K3 million. Unifers Malawi has given K2.5 million, and Destiny Construction and Cobbe Construction have both added K1 million each. Additionally, Magic Cleaning Services donated K500,000, with Intersafe also providing sponsorship.

Mpeketula extended an invitation to well-wishers and local businesses to support the event further. He emphasized that the primary goal of the race is to raise funds for constructing a security fence around Nkhotakota LEA School. This school serves as a dedicated facility for special needs learners, making the cause particularly meaningful.

Reflecting on last year’s race, Mpeketula noted that the Tour de Dwangwa covered an 80-kilometer route from Kande to Chitowe Stadium, offering both a challenging course and scenic views for participants. The 2023 event drew praise for its well-organized structure and strong community engagement.

In that 2023 edition, Steven Nazombe, a 44-year-old from Blantyre Cycling Club, successfully defended his title. He completed the 80-kilometer route in an impressive 2 hours and 25 minutes, showcasing his endurance and dedication to the sport.

With strong community support, committed sponsors, and a meaningful cause, the 2024 Tour de Dwangwa race promises to be an exciting and impactful event. Organizers are optimistic that this year’s race will exceed expectations, continuing the tradition of excellence and community involvement.
