Police in Mangochi have arrested three women accused of stealing gallons of motor vehicle oil and various groceries from Chipiku Stores in the district.
The suspects have been identified as Daina Thukuwa, 60, an ex-convict; Rose Samson, 66; and Lucy Mangani, 64.
According to reports, on January 2, 2025, the trio entered Chipiku Stores posing as customers. They allegedly concealed the stolen items, including three 5-liter gallons of motor vehicle oil, between their thighs and in their bras while wearing oversized clothing.
A shop attendant became suspicious after noticing their unusual walking patterns, which led to their apprehension and a subsequent search.
Police records show that Thukuwa was convicted of a similar offense in 2022 and served a two-year sentence at Mangochi Prison.
Meanwhile, Samson was arrested last month for shoplifting at another supermarket in Mangochi.
The suspects have been charged with theft, contrary to Section 278 of the Penal Code.
They are expected to appear in court once the necessary paperwork is finalized.
Thukuwa hails from Kachikuni Village, Traditional Authority Nsamala, Samson comes from Mabuka village, Traditional Authority Mkaya in Balaka while Mangani hails from Lungucha village, Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre.
