Kawale Police amend case into murder for remanded suspect

Police in kawale have amended the charge sheet of Acts Intending to Cause Grievious harm for Thomas Gwero Phiri,32 into murder following the death of a business man, Lameck Kunyengana who was hospitalized at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH).

It is on record that the suspect were staying together with Lameck Kunyengana (now deceased) and on December 8, 2024 the victim assigned Phiri ( suspect) to supervise his shop in Area 24 for the whole day until night.

After working, it is alleged that the two disagreed on payment, Lameck offered Phiri (suspect) K 10,000 an amount that the suspect refused demanding more money as payment for the job.

This graduated into a fight, in the process the suspect stabbed his friend in the stomach with unspecified object but was rescued by community after hearing the shout for help.

Following this, Phiri got arrested and was on remand at Maula Prison answering the case of Acts Intending to Cause Grievious harm while the victim was receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

But unfortunately on January 6, this year the victim died while receiving treatment at the said facility.Postmortem conducted revealed that death was due to severe septic shock from multiple perforated bowels.

This sad development, prompted police to amend the charge for Phiri who was answering a lower punishable case to murder.

Thomas Gwero Phiri hails from Mbirintengerenji Village, Traditional Authority Champiti in Ntcheu district.
