SADC TO ESTABLISH COUNTER TERRORISM CENTRE

The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries have agreed to establish SADC Counter Terrorism Centre to help in curbing the increasing threats of terrorism and insurgence in the region.

This was disclosed at the end of the Extraordinary Ministerial Committee of Organ of Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation in Gaborone, Botswana.

SADC Executive Secretary Stergomena Tax said the center will “ensure prompt monitoring of terrorism and counter attacks before they occur.”

Defence ministers from SADC attended the meeting, and Jean Sendeza, Deputy Minister of Defence, represented Malawi.

She said Malawi being a member of SADC, will continue to work in collaboration with other countries in peace building.

The ministerial meeting was convened as heads of state and government’s summit is scheduled for November 27.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is expected to attend. –
