Parliament has reconvened this afternoon for its four-week-long meeting.
The business started with Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara welcoming three newly elected Legislators from Mzimba, Nkhotakota and Dedza.
Meanwhile, the House has adopted recommendations by the Legal and Security Affairs to rectify security lapses at Parliament.
Among other things, the security measures entail that except for the country’s President and their Vice, everyone getting to Parliament be subjected to thorough security checks and that no one should carry any offensive equipment including a firearm.
The proposed measures follow circumstances that led to the death of former 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Clement Chiwaya, on September 30 this year.
The House has also tightened its standing orders to avoid a recurrence of the smuggling of a Money Bill into the Chamber during the last sitting of the National Assembly.
According to a statement, the current meeting is the fourth in the 49th session of the Assembly. It is expected to run from Monday, October 8 to next month Friday, December 3.
