Chakwera Named Peace Envoy

Former President of Malawi and Malawi Congress Party leader, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, has been appointed by the Commonwealth Secretary-General to serve as Special Envoy to Tanzania, where he will support peace-building efforts and facilitate national dialogue.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe, Dr. Chakwera said he is ready to take on the assignment and will travel to Tanzania from 18 to 21 November to meet government officials, political leaders, civil society, religious and traditional leaders, and other stakeholders. The mission aims to promote reconciliation, governance reforms, and long-term stability.

He will be supported by Professor Luis Franceschi, the Commonwealth’s Assistant Secretary-General responsible for governance and peace-building.

Dr. Chakwera also disclosed that he consulted Malawi’s President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, before accepting the role, and that the President gave his full approval. He further appealed to Malawians to keep him in their prayers as he undertakes this important task.

The appointment comes at a sensitive period in Tanzania, where political tension and post-election disputes have raised concerns. The envoy mission falls under the Commonwealth’s Good Offices initiative, which focuses on quiet diplomacy and conflict resolution among member states.
