CHAKWERA ARRIVES IN US FOR UNGA SUMMIT

His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, has arrived in New York, United States of America, where among other engagements is expected to address the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2022.

President Chakwera was welcomed by Hon. Nancy Tembo, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Agnes Chimbiri-Molande, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other senior Government officials.

The President is attending UNGA in person for the first time since taking office following his decision to attend last year’s hybrid event virtually and the UN’s decision to do a virtual-only event in 2020.

This year’s UNGA, to be held under the theme “A WATERSHED MOMENT: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges” is the first in-person-only meeting of world leaders in the Covid-19 era.

“With no virtual addresses allowed at this year’s Assembly, and with so many nations reeling from the effects of various interlocking issues disrupting the global economy’s supply chain and raising commodity prices worldwide, this Assembly is a must-attend event that is expected to bring together over 150 Heads of State and Government, a record number, to tackle the issues multilaterally,” said the Foreign Affairs Minister.

On Friday, September 16, 2022, the Malawi leader will deliver a lecture at Lipscomb University in Tennessee. The President travels to Washington DC on September 27, 2022, for the signing of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact with the American Government among other high-profile engagements.
