Police sound alarm on increased murder and suicide cases

Police in Mangochi have expressed concern over the rising number of murder and suicide cases in the district, prompting them to take to the streets to educate the public about these issues.

According to statistics at the Station, there have been 18 murder cases from January to April this year, compared to 11 cases during the same period last year. Additionally, there have been four cases of suicide (three males and one female) this year, up from two cases in 2023.

As part of the awareness campaign, officers led by Mangochi Police Station Officer In-charge Mr. Morgan Dzonzi, Assistant Commissioner of Police, along with personnel from Malamia Mobile Camp and Eastern Region Immigration Headquarters, on May 4, 2024 marched from Mpondasi to M’baluku Trading Centre.

Expressing his concern at Soko Trading Centre, Dzonzi assured the public that the police are tirelessly working to address these issues, stating, “The increase in murder cases reflects a decay in our moral values, which must be condemned. As police, we are committed to ensuring the protection of every individual’s life.”

Community Policing Coordinator Inspector James Kumbikano urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead cooperate with the police by reporting suspected criminals for proper legal action.

Echoing the same, Inspector Beatrice Chimbalanga cautioned Kabaza operators against working irregular hours, noting recent cases where operators were killed after being hired. She also encouraged them to collaborate with the police by reporting any suspicious activities.

Police in the district commended communities and stakeholders for their support in combating crime.
