The Senior Resident Magistrate (SRM) Court in Lilongwe on February 9, 2022 sentenced and convicted a 22 – year-old Chikondi Gulosi to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for robbery.
The court heard through state prosecutor Sub Inspector Roxy Nsaka of Kawale Police that Gurosi committed the offence on July 17, 2019 at Mchesi near winners chapel church.
Nsaka further told the court that Gurosi and his friend attacked a Burundian national and robbed him money, ATM cards and two cellphones. The total value of the stolen items being MK544,000 and left the victim unconscious.
The matter was reported at Kawale Police whereby the victim was issued a referral letter to Kamuzu Central Hospital. However, following extensive investigation Gurosi and his accomplice were arrested in August, 2019.
Appearing in court, Gulosi pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against him and this prompted the state to parade 3 witnesses who testified against him.
In his submission, Nsaka told the court that robbery is a serious offence and prayed for a stiffer punishment to deter other would-be offenders.
In mitigation, Gurosi asked for leniency saying he is a breadwinner for his family.
Passing sentence, SRM Florence Msekandiana concurred with the state and sentenced him to 18 years IHL.
Gurosi hails from Gulo Village, Traditional Authority Njolomole in Ntcheu District.
