Man fined K250,000.00 in Lumbadzi for grievous harm

The Mkukula First Grade Magistrate Court in Lumbadzi on Monday, September 26, 2022 has ordered a 29 year-old man Bright Layikolo to pay a fine of K250,000.00 or in default to serve a 2-year jail term for the offence of grievous harm.

The court through state prosecutor Sergeant George Makina heard that on September 14, 2022 the accused was drinking beer together with a sex worker at Jodo bottle store at M’gwaza village in Lumbadzi.

In the course of drinking the accused begged a cigarette from the victim (sex worker) who denied, prompting the accused to start fighting. During the fight, the complainant was bitten her lower lip.

Appearing in court Layikolo pleaded guilty to the charge.

In mitigation, the convict asked for court’s leniency saying he is a first offender and breadwinner to his family.

In submissions, Makina asked for a stiff punishment saying the offence the convict committed is serious in nature and should be a deterrent to other would-be offenders.

Passing the sentence, First grade Magistrate Thomson Midiasi concurred with the state and ordered Layikolo to pay a fine of K 250, 000.00 or in default to serve 2-year jail term.

Layikolo hails from Makwandu village in the area of Traditional Authority Chimutu in Lilongwe.
