Man arrested for killing wife

Police in Chiponde, Mangochi have arrested a 57-year-old man for allegedly murdering his wife, Emily Baiton Milanzi, 53, following a domestic dispute over misused household funds.

The tragic incident occurred on May 3, 2025, at around 16:00 hours in Mkandu Village, under Sub-Traditional Authority Chiponde in Mangochi District.

The suspect has been identified as Nikisi John Senior, from Njatu Village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in the district.

According to the couple’s 19-year-old son, Nikisi John Junior, the two had been married for years and had 12 children together. The suspect, a known habitual drinker, had reportedly assaulted his wife on several occasions in the past.

Preliminary investigations indicate that on the day of the incident, an argument erupted after the suspect used part of the money sent by their daughter from South Africa intended for household needs to buy alcohol.

He returned home intoxicated and engaged in a quarrel with his wife. When questioned about the misused funds, he allegedly became violent and physically assaulted her, causing her to fall unconscious. She was rushed to a nearby private clinic, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The matter was reported to Chiponde Police Unit, whose officers visited the scene and arrested the suspect.

Her body was later referred to Chiponde Health Centre for a postmortem, which confirmed that she died of brain trauma resulting from head injuries sustained during the assault.

Nikisi John Senior will appear in court to answer a murder charge once the necessary paperwork is completed.

Police in Mangochi have strongly condemned gender-based violence and are urging community members to resolve domestic disputes peacefully and seek help from relevant authorities to prevent such tragedies.
