Students at Lilongwe Teachers Training College (TTC) have halted classes, protesting the government’s failure to fully pay their field allowances.
According to Giveness Mwanza, president of the Students’ Union, repeated efforts to engage the government on the issue have yielded no results. Mwanza revealed that some students received partial payments, while others received nothing.
“Each student was entitled to 20,000 kwacha per month for six months,” Mwanza stated.
The college management confirmed that students have not attended classes for two weeks due to the standoff.
Mphatso Nkuonera, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, has requested more time to consult on the matter.
